"Never fear shadows. They simply mean there's a light shining somewhere nearby." ~ Ruth E. RenkelI discovered this piece of wisdom as an undergraduate photography student and it has continued to resonate with me throughout my artistic career. The contrast of light and dark are as striking and emotional as a form emerging out of the blackness of night. My fascination with the rich shadows that light casts, especially when taking on the human form, led me to photograph friends playing with their shadows as children do. Although the shoots were energetic and reminiscent of youth, the images have been interpreted as both sinister and playful. The Shadow series brings me to the essence of the photographic craft-the painting of light and dark-and serves as a reminder that there is always a light shining nearby.
