I am often immersed in an adventure, journey, or moment and think- I wish I had a camera! The physical proof is desirable because an image has the power to resurface emotions. I tend to get caught up in the momentum of life. To freeze an instant in time is beautiful in its ability to provide a simplified and contained version of the chaos. By nature I am a visual person, so sometimes the memory is not enough. The Kaledioscapes are the result of my need to document and make real my travels. The images mimic my constantly changing view of the world, just as a kaleidoscope reflects complex, frequently changing patterns. The images overlap and angles vary, making individual frames difficult to pinpoint. Similarly, memories are difficult to encapsulate since they rarely can be defined by a single moment. When I visit a place that stimulates me, I find myself looking in every direction- attempting simultaneously to process and make sense of it. These photographs allow me to absorb my life with the clarity that time provides. While my rational side knows that a picture is not an equivalent to the experience, a part of me believes what I am seeing as truth. Some elements are intentionally excluded, others distorted, some enhanced. The result is a concoction of truth and fantasy, which then becomes my artistic interpretation of the moment. The Kaledioscapes are a timeline of my past instances. And though I capture my memories with light on film they are fragile and frequently shift. The Kaledioscapes represent my journey through life, which is as complex, beautiful, and surprising as the turn of a kaleidoscope.
